Safety around ChildrenInstalling wallcoverings is not a dangerous occupation but it is one which does have some hidden dangers. All of us know enough to keep razor blades out of the reach of children. We know that if we drop something from the top of the ladder and it lands on a child's head that child will be hurt. That is the common sense stuff. But there are some things about wallcoverings you might not know. PASTE IS NOT PASTEIf you are working with modern wallcovering adhesives you should be aware that the paste is poison. We are all accustomed to the paste that we had in school. Thinking back on it you can probably remember what it tasted like. Every child in America has probably eaten their fair share. Therefore when we see that a baby or a child has but some wallcovering paste in their mouth we don't get alarmed. But we should. Wallcovering adhesives usually contain mold and mildew protection. What protects against mold and mildew can make your child (or your customer's child) very sick. It isn't school paste -- it's poison. BUCKETS CAN KILLEvery year in this county small children are killed by drowning in five gallon buckets. It doesn't seem that it would be a danger that we should worry about but even one child's unnecessary death should make us aware of the danger. Toddlers are curious souls. At that young age their heads are much larger in proportion to rest of their small bodies. They find themselves next to a five gallon bucket. They look over into it. Then they are in it. Head first. With no way to get out. The picture of it is enough to give you the shivers. So take the ordinary safety measures you would around any small child. But don't forget the hidden dangers. A minute of inattention can mean a lifetime of agony. Back to lesson page
